Real Life. Messy Faith — Episode 2

This episode comes from one of the live devotionals in the prayer challenge series.
It wasn’t scripted or polished — just a real conversation about faith in the middle of everyday life.
Today’s devotional focuses on God’s faithfulness and provision — and how His provision can look different depending on the season we’re walking through.
God’s Faithfulness in Every Season
One of the passages that has been on my heart lately is:
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 4:19
Life moves through seasons.
Some seasons feel abundant.
Some feel uncertain.
Some bring clarity.
Others feel confusing or overwhelming.
But no matter what season we find ourselves in, God remains the same.
His character doesn’t change.
He is still faithful.
He still provides.
He still keeps His promises.
One truth that has been settling deeply in my heart lately is this:
Provision doesn’t always mean excess.
Sometimes provision simply means having enough for today.
And learning to trust that can be one of the most challenging parts of faith.
Remembering God’s Provision
Growing up, my parents ran a Christian bookstore in Hanover for nearly twenty years.
During that time, my sister and I had a front-row seat to watch how God provided for our family.
There were seasons when money was tight.
Moments when it wasn’t clear how things were going to work out.
But again and again, God showed up.
Those experiences shaped how I see His faithfulness today.
One of the earliest examples Mike and I experienced in our own marriage happened during our first year together.
Mike had been laid off from a construction job for a time, and we didn’t know how we were going to pay rent. I had just started working part-time at Old Navy, but it definitely wasn’t enough to replace a full-time income.
One day Mike received a voicemail from someone he had worked with during college. They said there was an envelope in their mailbox with his name on it and asked if he could come pick it up.
We drove over together.
Mike went inside while I stayed in the van praying. Christmas was coming, rent was due, and we truly didn’t know how things were going to work out.
While I sat there praying, I suddenly had this strong sense that whatever was in that envelope was going to be $1,000.
When Mike came back to the van, he was counting the money.
I looked at him and asked, “It’s $1,000, isn’t it?”
And it was.
Moments like that become markers in your faith journey — reminders of God’s faithfulness when you need them most.
Provision Looks Different in Every Season
The challenge with moments like that is that sometimes we begin to expect God to provide in the exact same way every time.
When unexpected situations arise — a broken appliance, a car repair, or another sudden expense — it can be tempting to assume God will show up the same way again.
But God’s provision doesn’t always look the same.
Recently a mentor shared something with me that really stuck:
“It’s not regression — it’s refinement.”
Even when our circumstances look similar to past struggles, we are not the same people we were before.
If we are continuing to seek God and grow in our relationship with Him, then those moments are not steps backward.
They are opportunities for God to refine our faith.

Manna for Today
Sometimes God’s provision looks like the manna the Israelites received in the wilderness.
God provided food from heaven each day, but the people were instructed to gather only enough for that day.
If they tried to store extra, it spoiled.
God was teaching them something important:
trust Him daily.
Provision wasn’t about stockpiling security for the future.
It was about learning dependence.
Sometimes our lives feel like that wilderness season — where we’re trusting God one day at a time.
Milk and Honey
Other times, provision looks more like the Promised Land — a land described in Scripture as flowing with milk and honey.
There are seasons of abundance.
Seasons where blessings overflow.
But even those seasons remind us of something deeper: God is the source.
The abundant life Jesus speaks about in John 10:10 isn’t always about material wealth.
Often it’s about something far richer:
peace, hope, purpose, and relationship with Him.
Seeking the Right Source
Jesus speaks directly to our worries in Matthew 6:
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
— Matthew 6:33
When life feels uncertain, our instinct is often to search for answers everywhere else first.
But Jesus reminds us to seek God first.
When our focus shifts back to Him, our perspective begins to change.
When the Scenery Changes
Here’s the truth I keep coming back to:
When the scenery changes, the source of our provision does not.
Circumstances shift.
Seasons change.
Life becomes uncertain.
But God remains the same.
His faithfulness hasn’t changed from generation to generation — and it won’t change tomorrow either.
A Final Reflection
Where do you see God’s faithfulness in your life right now?
Sometimes we only recognize it when we look back.
But when we pause and reflect, we often realize that even in our hardest seasons, God has been quietly providing all along.
And that reminder gives us the courage to trust Him for whatever comes next.
